I want to simplify this for you. Remember that every application to immigrate to Canada has individual merits.

Skilled Immigrant

This is the avenue mostly used by the middle class to immigrate to Canada. In sharp focus here is your education and work experience, supported by your English and/or French Language competence.

Contrary to public opinion out there, a 1-year certificate/diploma after high school is good enough. You will need to have worked using that qualification for at least a year in the last 10 years. If you are aged between 21-49, and can communicate well in English and/or French, your chances are reasonably high. Send me your resume.

Self-Employed

Are you an Athlete, an Artist running own business? Have you competed in World Events? The focus here is not on education, but on your competence in the arts and sports world.

Business Class

Canada offers permanent residence to Investors and Entrepreneurs. To qualify as either, you need evidence of business experience and should be worth a specified amount of money, called the net worth.

Provincial Nominee

The Provinces in Canada experience shortages of labour and have entered into an agreement with the Federal Government to source these skills internationally. This is how it works:

An employer in the province will offer you a position. The employer clears with the Provincial Immigration Office, who sends your acceptance to the visa office abroad. The visa office calls you for an interview to assess admissibility and to corroborate your particulars. Then a visa is issued.

Live-in Care Giver

You can obtain a work permit if you have a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident willing to hire you as a Live-in Care Giver. The Canadian government is so kind to Live-in Care Givers that after a successful 2-year employment, one is allowed to apply from within Canada to become a Permanent Resident. To qualify for the work permit, you need to have at least 6-months training in childcare, caring for the elderly and/or people with disabilities. A first aid certificate and a high school transcript are mandatory requirements.

Student

Once you have been allowed into Canada as a student, it will not be a bad idea to start planning for an application for permanent residence later after your school life. Right now, an international student who successfully completes a 2-year course will be allowed to work in Canada for 3 years after graduating. Those 3 years will boost your points when you make an application as a skilled immigrant. This is a smart way for ambitious young people who intend to live permanently in Canada.
